The Publishing Timeline

The cost of commissioning Melrose Books to produce a book is all-inclusive and embraces every activity associated with publishing over and above that of production. It is a very comprehensive publishing process that fully involves the author at every stage. The Melrose Books' publishing experience is outlined step-by-step below.

Submit your manuscript to Melrose Books for appraisal.

The Commissioning Panel will read your manuscript and assess its potential for publication. If your work is suitable for publication, you will be contacted by the Commissioning Editor with a detailed publishing proposal. The author is welcome to meet with our Commissioning Editor in person to discuss the proposal. Until the Final Contract is signed by both parties there is no obligation to proceed whatsoever.

The Commissioning Editor will liaise with the Author throughout the publishing process.

The manuscript will be assigned to one of our experienced editors and the author will receive regular proofs for checking prior to publication.

An artist will be commissioned to design a range of dust jackets from which the author can choose a preferred design.

The final draft of the manuscript is handed to our book production staff for lay-out. The manuscript will be prepared in a suitable format to be sent to print.

A promotion strategy is now formulated for the author's consideration. Once a strategy is approved the Publicity Department will start promoting the book to media outlets to encourage reviews. Television, radio stations, newspapers and magazines will be approached to encourage author interviews and features.

The Author receives complimentary advance copies of their book.

The stock of published books is carefully stored in our warehouse. The books are distributed from our centre in Ely to individuals, bookshops and book distributors, both in the UK and abroad.
